Western New Mexico Sweeps St. Mary's in 2006 Softball Homestand Finale

Silver City, NM -- Western New Mexico continued their strong play of late by taking the final home games of the season from visiting St. Mary's, 5-3 and 8-7 before a boisterous "Great Race" crowd in Silver City. The sweep of the Rattlers takes WNMU to 23-20 (16-8 HC), while St. Mary's falls to 41-22 and 15-9 in the Heartland.

The Mustangs got four runs in the fifth inning of game one to take the Rattlers 3-1 lead and then held the visitors to just one run in the final inning for the final margin. Molly Yetman (11-8) got the win for the Stangs, and Cassidi Caringi scored two runs and got two hits.

Game two saw the Rattlers get five runs in the third and two more in the seventh, but the Mustangs answered right back with a two-run sixth inning and they followed that up with a five-run inning of their own in the seventh. The Mustangs scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth off a base hit from Caringi bringing in Shawna York in for the winning run.

The win moves WNMU to the third seed in the Heartland Conference Tournament next weekend behind St. Edward's and Incarnate Word. St. Mary's will compete as the fourth seed and MSU-Billings will go as the fifth seed.
